The Gouffre de Proumeyssac, also known as the “Crystal Cathedral,” is among the most impressive caves in the Dordogne. Located near the quaint village of Le Bugue, this spectacular cave offers visitors a magical underground experience. As the largest passable cave in the Périgord, it is known for its breathtaking crystal formations and majestic underground dome.
The adventure begins as soon as you enter the cave through a tunnel or, for the adventurous visitor, by a glass elevator that lets you descend slowly to the heart of the cave. Once down, you enter an immense domed space, where an enchanting play of light beautifully illuminates the crystalline stalactites and stalagmites.
The history of the Gouffre de Proumeyssac is equally fascinating. Countless legends used to be told about the mysterious depths of the cave. It was not until the end of the 19th century that the cave was officially discovered and opened to the public. Today, visitors can enjoy a guided tour, with expert guides bringing the cave’s geological wonders and stories to life.
The visit takes about 45 minutes and can be made on foot or by revolving gondola. This gondola, with room for 11 visitors, offers panoramic views of the gorge and provides an unforgettable experience for the whole family!
