Aubeterre-sur-Dronne, one of France’s most beautiful villages, is home to the impressive underground church of Saint-Jean. Carved out of limestone in the 12th century, this church feels almost otherworldly with its impressive size and mystical atmosphere. The church is a whopping 20 metres high, with imposing pillars reaching to the ceiling and a baptismal font carved from a single block of stone.
During the Festival des Nuits, the church comes alive. Every summer, usually in July and August, the church is transformed into a stage for a variety of musical performances, ranging from classical music to local folk music. The excellent acoustics and atmospheric lighting make for a unique experience you won’t want to miss.
