The caves of Lascaux, the Dordogne’s most visited attraction, are among the most important archaeological sites in France. With more than 600 prehistoric paintings and engravings, they offer a fascinating insight into the lives of our distant ancestors. The caves were discovered by chance in 1940 by teenagers and are today known as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Lascaux IV: A Perfect Replica of the Original Masterpiece
In 2016, Lascaux IV was opened, a high-tech replica of the original cave. Here, visitors can admire the famous prehistoric art without damaging the fragile original. Thanks to advanced 3D scanning, the entire cave was recreated 1-to-1. From meticulously cutting out Styrofoam to casting in durable materials and meticulously repainting the paintings and colour changes in the rock, the project required three years of work by 30 specialised restoration painters.
Besides the visual aspect, the replica feels authentic due to its accurate mimicry of the temperature, smell and humidity of the original cave.
A Complete Visitor Centre in the Vézère Valley
